Do You Need a Review in Counseling Psychology?
Counseling students and practitioners have unanimously chosen The Encyclopedia of Counseling, 3rd edition as a must have study resource. The Encyclopedia of Counseling is a favorite study aid among counseling professionals because it thoroughly reviews material in the following areas: Counselor Function/Professional Orientation/and Ethics, Counseling Theory and the Helping Relationship, Human Growth and Development, Group Process, Social and Cultural Foundations, Diagnosis and Treatment Planning, Marriage and Family, Research Methods, Individual Appraisal (Assessment), and Lifestyle and Career Development. In fact, this resource is so expansive in subject that it is used frequently to study for the National Counselor Exam (NCE) and Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (CPCE).
I recommend this resource to any student or practitioner that wants to review Counseling Psychology without having to re-read all their textbooks or purchase a set of books on each of these subjects. For students that are too busy to read this publication, then I recommend purchasing the Vital Information and Review Questions for the NCE, CPCE, and State Counseling Exams, 15th Anniversary Edition 20 disc CD-ROM set that Dr. Rosenthal offers, as it covers all this material via audio. Furthermore, students can listen to the CDs in their car, PC or Mac.
For students not pursuing licensure who are wondering if this resource would benefit them, I would still recommend Rosenthal's materials because it gives a student or practitioner the reassurance that they are continuing to develop competence in the field of counseling. In case a student forgets material, then they have Rosenthal's materials to refresh with as often as the student prefers. Students that are not yet studying counseling should consider purchasing these resources if they are feeling overwhelmed by the expansive nature of the field or even curious about counseling practice. While this resource will not give step-by-step tips on how to counsel a client, it does generously cover counseling etiquette, theories, and practice recommendations (multiple choice format with lengthy written explanations for each question, review sections (appendices in the book), and outline of all subjects in appendices.
