Video on: Applying to Become a Licensed Psychologist

~QUOTE OF THE DAY~: "When the world says, "Give up,"Hope whispers, "Try it one more time."-unknown

Today, we are going to look at the requirements for becoming licensed as a clinical psychologist.  The video below will describe the steps from start to finish.  Yet, this is based on California requirements.  Not every state board includes a step-by-step video of their licensure process.  **Note: some states will require more or less hours for internship in order to qualify for licensure.  Also, the two California based exams mentioned in this video, the CPSE and CPLEE, only apply to individuals seeking to become licensed in CA.  Most applicants in the United States will have to take the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology.   Please check with your state board of professional psychology for more specifics.

For undergraduate students who have not yet begun their doctoral training, this is helpful information because it aids you in determining if becoming a licensed psychologist is right for you.  Licensure is great, but becoming licensed requires usually 4-6 years of training, supervised pre-doctoral internship, supervised post-doctoral internship, passing the EPPP exam and ethics exam, paying for all of these exams and application fees out of pocket, which can be costly.  However, I encourage students to learn about this information early in order to be better prepared.  Do not decide against something that you really want to do in life.  Yes, there is a lot of steps involved in licensure, but learning about the process early helps students decipher if this is the best career route for them.  The road will be challening, but it will all be worth it in the end.  Stay true to your passion and time will fly by quickly.

Listen to this video for specific information on becoming a licensed psychologist.  Again, this video highlights California, USA requirements, but it is helpful in demonstrating the general state requirements for licensure.  Students who want to become licensed as an Industrial/Organizational Psychologist, School Psychologist, and so forth should contact their state board for details as the requirements differ from Clinical Psychology licensure.
