Can I Work in Psychology but With Less Focus on the Mental Health Component?
Yes, there are a variety of specialties in psychology that do not require you to work in psychiatric units, counsel violent offenders, or treat clients with severe psychological conditions. There is certainly a place for that work; however, students and professionals often realize that they desire to contribute to helping those with psychological conditions build goals, manage symptoms, and achieve wellness. This is a task that I myself have done in different settings, but students often wonder if they are limited to only those settings. The answer is no. As mentioned a few years ago on this blog, psychology has many specialties like Media Psychology, EcoPsychology, Traffic Psychology, Engineering Psychology, Industrial/Organizational (I/O) Psychology, Physiological Psychology, Social Psychology, International Psychology, Behavioral Analysis, Evolutionary Psychology, etc.
One area of psychology that we will look at today is I/O Psychology because it is a popular niche that students often have questions about it. Enjoy.
